Fees associated with a trade or reinvestment transaction should, in general, be entered in the Trade Fee field of that transaction.

Fees charged against the account which are not associated with a particular trade transaction should be entered as a separate transaction as follows:

Management Fees - Money management fees paid to a money manager or investment advisor should be recorded using the MFE transaction code, if debited against account cash.  The MFS code should be used if money market or other mutual fund shares are liquidated to pay the fee.  The money market or mutual fund ticker symbol should be used in the symbol field.  The MFD code should be used if the fee is paid using funds from outside the portfolio, e.g., from a checking account.

Administrative Fees - Account administrative fees, particularly flat fees, not related to account value should be recorded using the FEE transaction code, if debited against account cash.  The FES code should be used if money market or other mutual fund shares are liquidated to pay the fee, with the money market or mutual fund ticker used in the symbol field.  The FED code should be used if the fee is paid using funds from outside the portfolio, e.g., from a checking account.

See the topics Management Fees and Administrative Fees for examples of fee transactions.
